I’m participating in the UC Irvine Anti-Cancer Challenge during its 10-year anniversary this October to help fund lifesaving cancer research at the UCI Health Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center and CHOC, part of Rady Children’s Health.
I’ve been fundraising for several Breast Cancer charities for 12 years of which I’ve raised over $40,000 to support Breast Cancer programs and treatment. We’re always asked what our “why” is, why or what motivates us to participate and raise money for Breast Cancer? My answer has always been much the same: I’ve had too many in my life affected by this disease that impacts our mothers, grandmothers, sisters, aunts and friends. The list goes on. Some have fought the fight and won…others haven’t been so fortunate and have been taken by this disease.
But in 2020 I was faced with my own Breast Cancer diagnosis. Hearing the words “you have cancer” I would never thought I’d hear, much less process what was to come for me. It was also during the pandemic when so many surgeries were canceled, I was fortunate to have mine. I am blessed to be on the other side of cancer and while I’m the same person, my experience changed me in a way I didn’t expect. My Breast Cancer journey caused me to reevaluate my life with a full understanding of how precious it is and never take it for granted. I know it could return, but I choose not to let the fear of cancer control me.
I have many of you that have been loyal supporters since I began my mission to help the battle to end Breast Cancer since 2015. The last couple of years have drawn me towards the UCI Anti-Cancer Challenge. And while my passion is for Breast Cancer awareness, I like that this event supports ALL cancers, of which I and many of us have experienced with loved ones.
I’ve stepped up my training and will continue to condition my body in the coming months for this event. I’ve committed to cycling this October; please consider making a donation to my fundraiser, any amount makes a difference and brings us one step closer to a world without cancer.
Mostly, your support and encouragement means the most. I’m IN IT TO END IT, one turn of the pedals at a time!
